Last night, the Township Council issued a Proclamation renewing our commitment to reducing gun violence in our community and elsewhere. This Proclamation has been issued in Verona for many years, but last night it was also requested that we light our municipal buildings orange as a tribute to victims of gun violence-- just as we've lit our buildings blue for fallen officers, pink for breast cancer awareness, and blue/gold in solidarity with those suffering in Ukraine... Thus, I was truly surprised and dismayed when a Councilman "vehemently opposed" the Township honoring the victims of gun violence as we have so many others.
The majority ruled, the meeting moved on, and I went to bed last night unaware of the new horrors today would bring. But tonight I cannot close my eyes to the reality of another terrible school shooting, which took the lives of at least 18 small children and a teacher. This is a national tragedy. While some may argue that these events happened "outside Verona" and, therefore, beyond our concern, please recall that every child in the Verona Public Schools has had to prepare for the possibility of an active shooter. These horrors are something we anticipate could happen even here, in Verona. So, as a parent here in Verona, I'm spending tonight explaining to my school-aged children how these horrific events can and do happen to innocent children at their elementary school. That's not ok. My kids, your kids, students everywhere deserve to learn and live without fear of getting shot in school. Gun violence should not be a norm anywhere in the United States.
As a Councilwoman, I'm proud to be among the majority that chose to support the victims of gun violence; our flags have been lowered to half-staff and our buildings will be lit orange. Times of tragedy demand that we look after one another, providing support for those who need to grieve and be safe. That's what it means to be a community. That's Verona.

Thank you all for your comments, but please consider contacting the entire council via the Council Contact Form found here: www.veronanj.org/council
Thank you for posting this Cynthia. We are overwhelmingly failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us. Sounds like councilman Tamburro is one who believes himself exempt from our shared responsibility for the reality our kids face. What privilege to be exempt and *untouched* by gun violence! I am appalled everyday that the only “trainings” done since Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland and now Uvalde consist of our children huddling in corners of classrooms, closets and bathrooms to escape shooters?!? As if this is the only thing that can be done ✅ because people have been successful politicizing their need to bear assault rifles and body armor?!? Councilman Tamburro needs to do some major research and explain himself publicly how he does not see a responsibility for our community to show empathy for other communities as well as our own Verona victims of gun violence? Unconscionable! Have there been no Verona residents affected by gun violence? Are we not connected as a society to the many other communities affected? He is so wrong! l There is no place on a council for such ignorance. As a history teacher he may need to do some major brushing up on the research in this area. Unbelievable!
Thank you for your voice. We’re grateful to you and the members of the council who do support awareness of gun violence prevention.
I just watched the meeting on YouTube. I appreciate you bringing the meeting and the content regarding showing support for victims of gun violence to our attention. I strongly support the orange lighting and I think every responsible adult, especially those on our elected council, should support efforts to keep us safe. I am really tired of reactionary “they want to take our guns away” commentary when that is simply not true. This is about gun safety, not about taking guns away.
Thank you for your voice during the council meeting and for consistently advocating for victims and their families, Councilwoman!
Thank you for being grounded in reality and not false equivalence.
So glad the building will be lit with orange. Sure wish it did not have to be done, but as we saw today, it is definitely needed.
Thank you for your leadership
I was just thinking about this so thank you for advocacy for gun control!
🙏🏻
Thank you.
Thank you as always, as well as Deputy Mayor Christine McGrath, for your unwavering commitment to and leadership in gun violence prevention. As a gun violence survivor living in this community, thank you also for honoring gun violence victims by lighting the municipal building orange to bring awareness to victims of a preventable public health crisis in this country.
